The Reading Frame

State

The reading frame is the specific grouping of an mRNA sequence into consecutive, non-overlapping codons, fixed by where translation begins.

Show

The sequence AUGGGCUAA reads as AUG-GGC-UAA in its correct frame, but as a different, meaningless set of codons if shifted by one base.

Watch for

An mRNA has three possible reading frames, but the start codon fixes which one is actually translated.
