Group I viruses carry double-stranded DNA; Group II carry single-stranded DNA; Group III carry double-stranded RNA, each converted to mRNA differently.

Herpesviruses are Group I, transcribing mRNA like a host cell; rotavirus is Group III, transcribing mRNA from its double-stranded RNA genome.
Watch for
Group II's single-stranded DNA genome must first become double-stranded before transcription— it cannot be transcribed directly in single-stranded form.
