Moss Life Cycle, Worked

State

This procedure traces one moss's alternation of generations from spore germination through gametophyte growth, fertilization, and sporophyte development back to spore release.

Watch for

Skipping the water-dependent fertilization step is the most common error in tracing this cycle — without standing water connecting the two gametophyte structures, moss sperm cannot reach an egg at all.
