Thigmotropism is directional growth toward touch, as in a coiling tendril; thigmonasty is a touch response independent of the stimulus's direction, as in a snapping flytrap.

A pea tendril coils toward whatever it contacts, while a flytrap's leaves snap shut regardless of which side an insect brushes.
Watch for
Thigmonasty's speed differs from thigmomorphogenesis, the slower thickening triggered by sustained stress such as wind.
