Low blood pressure triggers renin release, which cleaves angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, then converted to angiotensin II, stimulating aldosterone release from the adrenal cortex, enhancing sodium reabsorption and water retention.

Angiotensin II also acts as a direct vasoconstrictor while stimulating the thirst and ADH responses that raise blood pressure.
