A multi-step unit conversion chains several conversion factors together in one sequence, each canceling the unit left by the previous factor, until only the target unit remains.
Converting 4.00 qt to milliliters when only 1 L = 1.0567 qt and 1 L = 1,000 mL are known requires two factors in sequence: 4.00 qt × (1 L / 1.0567 qt) × (1,000 mL / 1 L). The quarts cancel against the first factor, the liters cancel against the second, and the result rounds to 3.79 × 10³ mL, matching the three significant figures of 4.00 qt.
Trying to convert directly from quarts to milliliters without an intermediate unit invites an error when no single factor connects them directly — chaining through a shared intermediate unit, like liters here, is often required rather than optional.
