State
A precipitation reaction exchanges ions between two soluble compounds, forming a product whose ions exceed its Ksp and drop out as a solid.
Show
Mixing AgNO3 and NaCl exchanges ions; Ag+ and Cl− exceed AgCl's Ksp, so solid AgCl forms while Na+ and NO3− stay dissolved.
Watch for
Not every ion exchange precipitates — one occurs only if some combination's Q exceeds its Ksp.
