This capstone compares four organic compounds built from the same five-carbon backbone but carrying different functional groups, showing how structure alone predicts each compound's characteristic reaction type and relative oxidation level.
Watch for
Assuming pentanal can be produced only by oxidizing 1-pentanol, rather than recognizing it as one point along a general oxidation sequence any similarly structured alcohol would pass through, mistakes one worked example for the whole rule.
