Shaping means reinforcing successive approximations of a target behavior until the full behavior occurs.

One target behavior — a dog ringing a bell to go outside — trained from nothing, step by step: reinforcing orientation toward the bell, then contact, then sound, then sound before the door opens, with the criterion raised at each stage. Includes the step where the criterion is raised too fast and has to be lowered again.
