One Pass Through the Republic

The whole course is one long sentence: people consent to a designed government, choose its operators, and receive its outputs — with every step numbered.

Say the sentence slowly. People consent — the social contract idea the colonists carried (Gov 016) — to a designed government, and the design is a repair record: the Articles failed, and the Constitution answers the failures point by point (Gov 043), splitting power between levels in a bargain that never stops being negotiated (Gov 087) and promising two shields that took a second founding to deliver (Gov 134, Gov 481). The people form opinions and are measured (Gov 181), then choose the operators through a machine of stages and filters (Gov 231), connected to government by media, parties, and groups that transmit and select at once (Gov 291). The operators work three institutions: a Congress built to be deliberate (Gov 341), a presidency powerful and bounded atop an executing machine (Gov 401), and courts guarding the design with a claimed power and no army (Gov 441). The outputs discharge — domestic and foreign, action and chosen inaction (Gov 476) — and land back on the public, where evaluation feeds the next agenda and the sentence begins again.
